Amalgam phase down
Bangkok, Thailand – On May 1st, 2024 Dr. Achara Nitiapinyasakul, Director-General of the Department of Health, presided over the press conference announcing the collaborative project to accelerate the reduction of dental amalgam use and strengthen Thailand's capacity in environmental management under the Minamata Convention on Mercury. The event was held at the Vayupak hall at Centra by Centara Hotel Chaeng Watthana.
The press conference aimed to declare the joint commitment to reduce and manage dental amalgam waste in Thailand.Joining the press conference were Ms. Preeyaporn Suwanaked, Director-General of the Department of Pollution Control,Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment; Assoc.Prof.Dr.Prathip Phantumuvanit, Representative of Dental Faculty Consortium of Thailand; Assoc.Prof.Dr. Nirada Dhanesuan, Representative of the Dental Association of Thailand; and Dr. Kritsada Tiranon, President of the Thai Private Dental Practitioners Association.
Participants in the event included representatives from partner agencies involved in the project, namely: the Food and Drug Administration, the Department of Health Support Services, Praboromarajchanok Institute, the World Health Organization (Thailand), the Dental Council of Thailand, the Royal College of Dental Surgeons of Thailand, the Thai Pediatric Dental Association, the Dental Association of Provincial Public Health Offices, the Environmental Health Office, the International Cooperation Center, and executives from the Department of Health.
